Pet Boa Constrictors - Tips : Pet Boa Constrictors - Tips For Choosing A Healthy Pet SnakeBuying a boa constrictor is a long term commitment. They grow to a considerable size, and can live for 20 - 30 years, so it really pays to make sure you are buying the right specimen. Buying a wild caught snake that may always be difficult to handle, or a snake with health problems which could run up large vets bills, can be avoided. Here is a check list of what to look for and ask when you go to view a boa, to help ensure that you buy a snake that will be a joy to own and care for. Is the seller reputable? Try and get recommendations from other people who dealt with this seller in the past. Speak to friends, your local herpetological center, or check online forums to find out if this seller is trusted and respected. Are the animals well cared for? Look at all the enclosures, not just at the snake you are interested. Are they clean? Do the animals look fit and healthy? Do they appear to have the right setups (enclosure size, heating, lighting, water etc)? Does the boa look healthy and alert? Before you handle the boa, have a good look at it. Pay specific attention to the eyes which should look bright and alert. The mouth should be closed, not gaping, and its tongue should be flicking. Check for any discharge around the mouth, nose and eyes. Look at the skin, it should be smooth and elastic. There should be no scars, lumps, bumps or burns (you may need to lift the snake to check for meat mat burns on the belly). A healthy boa should not look over weight, or emaciated. A boa of ideal weight should be well rounded and solidly built, but not plump. With the sellers permission, gently lift the snake and feel along the abdomen and back for any bumps or abnormalities. Lift the tail and check for any dried faecal matter around the vent which could be a sign or parasites, or the boa being kept in crowded conditions.
